Mexican free-tail bats flying out from under the Congress Avenue Bridge in Austin, Texas- the largest urban bat colony in North America, estimated at 1.5 million bats. Between mid March and early November these bats set out every night at dusk as they go in search of food, before heading to Mexico for the winter. Hot, dry, August nights have the largest swarms, but it was spectacular even on the cool October evening we watched them.
