Thanks to 19lfm12 for identifying this piece as the Festival Procession by Richard Strauss. This was one of several pieces performed during a noon recital in the early 1980s when I visited Keith and his wife Sally; sadly they both died in a tragic airplane accident in 1989, a great loss to their families and the music community at large. See the other videos that I've uploaded of this recital for more information.

  • Seeing this brings back great memories! Thanks for posting!

Was he using the pedal divide at the end to play that solo trumpet line with his right foot? I didn't see him thumbing down to play it, so I'm not sure how he did it except for playing it in the pedals.

Please post more videos of Keith if you have them!

  • There are more videos of Keith posted, five total, all from the same noontime concert on the day I was visiting Keith.

  • Seems like the background noise was much lower in those days...I wish there were more after store hours concerts now. Thanks, smsoe!

  • From 5'30, we can see Keith using the crescendo and also that some divisions are excluded from this crescendo (using the tablets under the desk) as you can hear the Posthorn clearly above the rest (playing with the Pedal divide I guess).

  • Originally composed for 22 brass instruments and timpani, it was transcribed by Strauss for a big orchestra. Reger did the organ transcription.

  • Outstanding!
