like in some sports there were short streaks of brilliance, like with fischer's career or sandy koufax's career and then there are the CY YOUNGS who last forever, have very long careers and dominate virtually the whole time, that was gary, the CY YOUNG AWARD, better yet, HALL OF FAME IMMORTAL AWARD must go to gary, greatest player ever IF you must include time on top and years of play - some short streaks, like with fischer or koufax might never be beat, not even by cy young or gary

The equivalent to breaking your arm in baseball must be to wreck your head in chess. Fischer and Morphy both suffered from severe mental troubles after they had reached their peak.

interesting, i wonder how much playing chess had to do with it... fischer seemed like he was going to be on an aging disgruntled mean streak no matter what - hilariously enough as a rabid anti-semite jew... he was wacky for sure, and maybe the best ever yet in reading wiki on paul m. it seems fischer thought morphy was the greatest ever, before chess was given professional status, which fischer himself revolutionized into a HIGH paying status, maybe the jew in him (bobby would like that joke?)

no, he is very well functioning and proves that one does not have to be the least bit crazy in order to be an unbelievable genius at chess. Gazza rocks!

yes but they continue to play, better to play and get worse than not play... might as well be dead if you don't play chess
