You may want to add this on to your list. Thai is what I just read on the "Smart Car" (gasoline), "Though when first brought to the United States, the EPA rated the Smart Car at approximately 37 MPG, more testing has brought that amount to 60 MPG."

I have seen several Smart Cars in my town. I don't know who makes it - and it wasn't on the original MSNBC list (perhaps because it falls a little short of the 40 mpg mark).

Diesel is a 15 to one compression ratios where Gasoline engines average around 8 to one compression ratios. See most people dont know this but if you look at things like V6 camaro and V6 mustang today that makes 300hp plus and getting over 30 mpg you notice that the motors are old engines so what changed. The compression ratio went up due to there is only two ways to make hp increase compression or increase displacment. Two types of compression Static and Dynamic. Dynamic loses hp/ Static doesnt

One reason diesels are unpopular in the USA is that their reputation was destroyed by GM when they made their Diesel in the 70's, which was one of the worst engines ever made.

Smart is made by mercedes. Here in canda, most diesel options from Europe are not available too. But, gasoline is better for the environment.

what do you think of the upcoming ecoboost from ford? I have a 2010 tribute(it's an ford escape basically) with the 3L duratec engine. I get just barely under 32MPG, which is great for a V6 4WD.

They aren't available in the U.S. because the government wants us to pay more for gas..
