When my previous tenant moved in, I arranged with him to convert his last month/damage deposit to silver Maple Leaf coins. He recently moved out, and his deposits had appreciated 3x since 2007, making him quite happy especially when he opened the box we sealed at the time, and saw all that shiny metal - HIS metal. @Philippesdad1 the $4,000 is however worth a lot less than it was last year at the same time,since gas is over $4gal and food has at least went up 25-35 % but atill nt bad.

thus, I'd rather recommend guns and ammo, more primitive weaponry, good loyal friends to hunt with, dries food, owning land with capacity for growing and located far from epicentra of conflict, as the best insurance in case of major events in 2012, or any other time. Silver may be a decent short term investment now though, considering gold has already risen so much. A mix of raw materials, dug down in the woods, might (but not necessarily) be a good insurance.

raw material prices rise due to 1. expectation of a large war or economical crisis, 2. population growth (since the buying/selling power increases, but supply of raw material remains constant). The whole 2012 issue may not necessarily lead to silver getting more valuable. If option 1 - no great war happens, and/or 2 - population stabilizes. In the event of an "apocalypse", people may decide to make platinum the only thing of value, and/or force redistribution of it to equal starting points.
