Benedict XVI said he deeply regrets the pain caused to victims of sexual abuse by priests and religious in Australia. The Pope added that these abuses deserve an "unequivocal condemnation" and recognizes "the shame we all have felt" of these acts done to minors.

The victims need to receive care and compassion and those responsible for these evils must be brought to justice, stated the Pope.

In his homily at the city's Cathedral, the Pope addressed the seminarians and young religious, ensuring them that he joins them in prayer, so that this time of purification may bring reconciliation and a greater fidelity to the moral demands of Gospel. He also encouraged them to continue living according to their highest ideals of generosity in time and energy to the service of the Church.
