You can use can pumpkin if you like but cooking a pumpkin is easy and fun. Learn how to choose the right pumpkin and prepare it for a base of many recipes.
1) I wish I could see in detail how people are slicing Pumpkin open. Mine was SOLID ROCK hard, I had to use an aus 8 stainless steel utility blade (my kitchen knife was too thin and weak), you cut yours like NOTHING~! I am a male 6' tall 200 lb, my muscle was in pain after wrestling with it for 15 min. trying to slice it open.
2) After slicing it open without an injury, I could hardly scrape all the "meat" inside pumpkin using my regular smaller kitchen knife. The "meat" was still very hard.
