Sangolt88, Control of price is not achieved by closing refineries because reduced sales but higher price is as profitable for Big Oil as higher sales at lower price. Further, Big Oil gasoline transport costs increase by centralizing. Closing the refineries isn't to control price, it is to control consumption. Global demand overtook oil production. Saudi Arabia's giant oil fields are in serious decline, so too Russia's largest oil fields and together they produce about 20.5 million bpd.

For US East Coast residents real hardships ahead as big oil rations without calling it rationing by closing 3 PA refineries by July 2012 cutting over 50% of east coast refining capacity. Plus a 495k bpd in St Croix being closed, a major supplier to EC. Military on top of peak oil & no doubt calling the shots with big oil to manage oil supplies.

@1981busch Nah still loads of coal and a fair amount of natural gas. We'll be burning those for energy once the oil is too expensive and storing it as electricity in batteries for transportations (not as convenient as oil but manageable). We'll almost certainly pass tipping point before we stop using fossil fuels and then run away global warming will take care of itself without additional human inputs.
