Basic review of Pure Hydrations 3ltr armoured water bladder and the Aquasak inline filter system, from Bonjour64 regarding hiking. camping and trekking equipment and information.
Have you seen the Geigerrig hydration system that won the best new hardgoods product at the 2011 Outdoor Retailer show? It filters, it sprays, it turns insite out for cleaning in the dishwasher and it has an in-line filter that removes 99.9% of giardia and cryptosporidium. The hydration bladder is also backed with a nylon material. Very tough. They have a video on youtube where they put a bomb in the pack, blow it up, and the system works perfectly. Lifetime warranty.
Cons : Lack of mouthpiece cover. Keeping it from ending up trailing in grubby ground when for general use at wild camps,is more difficult than imagined and the makers inform me they don't make a cap yet. Black material = users have no idea how much water they're using, and the lack of litre markings mean the same guesswork fill / use. When your hands and the little grips on the top fill port that pull the sealing clips apart, are wet, it can be tricky to get a grip to pull apart.
Durability made me buy this one. Durability provides that peace of mind that pressure or 'non sharp' pokes from other gear in your pack is not going to puncture or tear it. Dual end push / pull & line shut off functions on the tube are good. On the round filling port, the durable plastic of the cap and base mean that it can be screwed / unscrewed easily and tight, unlike some other make's fill porst which can be more difficult to screw back in ( misaligned thread, etc ).
