Here's a homemade slide board built from materials from your large chain hardware stores. (2x4's, plywood, carpet and padding or mat, sheet of melamine, construction adhesive, wood screws and staples) It is about 2' from front to back and 6' from left to right. Use a pair of snug-fitting sneakers without a rough tread (like Converse All Stars) and pull an old dress sock over each shoe. It helps to spray and wipe the surface down with furniture polish or Armor All to keep it slippery. If you don't want to make one yourself and you live in the Delaware Valley area, look for my Delaware Craigslist ad (hockey slide board). I can custom build one for you. Note: This length is a little short for an adult player; you want a longer length, 7 - 8 feet, to really get a powerful stride going. Five to six feet in length is ideal for junior players.
Yes, I did cut this too short, I think an eight foot length is better suited to this kind of training. The point should be to emphasize explosiveness, and not to simulate an actual stride on the ice. Some of these other videos show a more effective way to use a slide board.

I keep my neck and spine aligned when I skate and use my peripheral vision. Yes, it appears I'm looking down, but my eyes are always looking ahead. That's a habit from boxing, to kept the chin tucked.
