I've spent more time playing Iron Maiden than any other band and, as a result, Nicko McBrain has really influenced my style. His combination of speed, really cool fills & great single kick playing are not only fun to emulate, but really improve your awareness of what's possible in a more limited musical environment (unlike Tool, for example). Iron Maiden is one of the all-time greatest bands and if you're a young drummer you need to explore their catalog!!
It is critical that every drummer develop their own unique style and interpretation. Therefore, I do not memorize any song exactly. I have spent 30 years playing drums and have developed my own style, which I prefer. I keep my playing within the framework of the song and will play a part exact if that part is either iconic (like Phil Collins In The Air Tonight) or critical to the success of the song.
