If you're going to be reading Nancy Farmer's House of the Scorpion, you might also like to read my favorite of her books, The Sea of Trolls. The sequel, called The Land of the Silver Apples, was just published a few months ago. I haven't had a chance to read it yet, but the reviews are good.
