@dschultz6072 But I have a great Shell video from a 1996 match between Jack and Lee, where in the pre match interview Jack says that Trevino and Hogan were the two best ball strikers ever, and he was not sure which one was a better ball striker. High praise from Jack. (Trevino went on to clean Jack's clock in the match, hitting almost every fairway and making lots of birdies, before inexplicably giving a bunch of strokes back by repeatedly hacking away at a ball he should have taken a drop.)
@JJMcKinnon1 yep, contrary to what jack nicklaus would have believed, he still can strike a ball as a seasoned citizen. nicklaus never liked lee's or palmer's sort of closed to open action that kept the face looking at the target, claiming it looked like it required too much effort.
Even today, he strikes the ball so well, that he'll stil beat most people using only one club, like a 200 year old fairway wood for example. He used to make money beating people with a taped up soda bottle on a stick. If you don't believe it, bring your wallet.
Jack Nicklaus had better competition than Tiger. If not for Tom Watson and Lee Trevino, he would have had a few more majors

We need more guys like Lee on tour today. He was a legend and an entertainer.

Why does it seem that the self-taught players are the ball strikers in history, Moe, Trevino, Hogan etc...

Trevino on a good week was pretty much unbeatable. By anybody.
He was the only guy to really scare Jack Nicklaus. When he was "on," his consistency was just unbelievable.
