@Addiskrilla the provos were provost, basically a MP (military police) for lack of better term. The soldiers in the church deserted (left their unit and tried to escape) which was, back then, and still today, a serious crime. It was punishable by death back then. So the Provost was sent to capture them before they could escape.

The best/saddest movie of all time, with an awsome theme song. Thanks for posting XD

This movie is kind of an American "All Quiet on the Western Front" in the way that everyone dies, as the realities of war are presented as vignettes.
A great unforgettable movie, that I first saw like so many others in 1968 at age 14.

I loved this movie too. The opening and ending songs combined with the sadness of the fates of the characters and good acting just made it really memorable for me as a kid. From the novel by Will James and a good score by Leonard Bernstein.

I love this movie. First saw it when I was 14. Paul Petersen told me I could get it on Ebay. I remembered James Caan, Michael Sarrazin, and Jan, but never made the connection with Harrison Ford. Those men were too fine to forget.
