Остров ("The Island", English Subtitles, Part 1 of 11)

Somewhere in Northern Russia in a small Russian Orthodox monastery lives a very unusual man. His fellow-monks are confused by his bizarre conduct. Those who visit the island believe that the man has the power to heal, exorcise demons and foretell the future. However, he considers himself unworthy because of a sin he committed in his youth. The film is a parable, combining the realities of Russian everyday life with monastic ritual and routine.

Вторая мировая война. Баржу, на которой Анатолий и его старший товарищ Тихон перевозят уголь, захватывает немецкий сторожевой корабль. Вымаливая пощаду у немцев, Анатолий совершает предательство — расстреливает Тихона. Немцы оставляют труса на заминированной барже, но благодаря помощи монахов, проживающих в монастыре на острове, ему удается выжить... Проходят годы. Старца Анатолия почитают за праведную жизнь и поистине чудесную помощь, которую он оказывает приехавшим сюда людям. Однако страшный грех убийства, совершенный им во время войны, не дает ему покоя. Чувствуя приближение своей кончины, Анатолий готовится к смерти и пока не знает, что скоро будет прощен...

Crikey. One of the best films I've seen for a very long time. Superb - and I've only seen the first ten minutes. You can tell it's going to be great in the first seconds of the first shot. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. Tikhon is very handsome - I'm sorry we don't see more of him. But maybe he survives? I can't wait to see the rest.

@TotalOrthodox There is no need to change my opinion. I support all the great religions, and they are great because they are about compassion. Already in the first ten minutes of this film there is compassion for this poor little man - and he represents all of us.

A fanatastic treasure of a film...the acting is gut wrenching! As difficult as the first

part of the movie is to watch, it has as its foundation a deep humanity and spirituality!

Compared to some of the vapid, violent, mindless entertainment the film industry

produces, this film has substance, a compelling theme, and is deeply engrossing!
