We all know a Kindle is used for reading. But did you know you can store PDF files on a Kindle? I use it for taking my camera manuals, copies of passports, and cruise documents with me when we go on a cruise.

  • Do you trust the password? Is it hackable? If you lose your Kindle are you worried about sensitive data on your personal documents?

  • @quantumystery The Kindle runs Linux if I am not mistaken. Notwithstanding any patches, I see no reason that it would be any less vulnerable than any other Linux system. Passwords are also up to the user to ensure they are complex enough. But no system is 100% safe, so I would not suggest putting really secret stuff on it - like your bank account.

  • Or, you can read the manual and learn how to use the camera. I don't think you're gonna have to refer back to the manual to take pictures of people gambling or wearing sunglasses. just saying.

  • @easyhec loading the camera manual is just an example...

Yes, you should be familiar with the manual. But some of the advanced functions are hard to remember - at least for an old guy like me.

The common functions that are used daily are easy to remember, but setting up a SB600 flash in remote CLS slave mode for instance is not all that intuitive, and as I only use that function occasionally, it's hard to remember for sure how to do it.

  • One question that has not been answered yet in any review I have viewed. How do you move files from the pc to the kindle? Do you sync through the USB or is that just used to recharge the device? Also is it possible to back up files from the kindle to my pc?

  • @Ga8torFan When it is connected to your PC, just drag and drop like you would with any other portable storage device; USB drive, etc.

  • Using Calibre you can convert Word, PDF just about anything to MOBI which is the Kindle Format.

  • You may want to mention that the kindle 3 3g version allows you to check your email and view internet web pages in over 100 countries for free with the "experimental" web browser feature. It doesn't support flash or other plugins but it is a standard webkit enabled browser that works great when you have phone signal but don't feel like tracking down an international free wifi spot. Most airports and places are charging quite a bit for a few hours of wifi so this is a nice feature.

  • Thanks for the great ideas! I don't travel on cruises, but I do have books that I have on PDF, like my Car owner's manual, and a couple of other electronic devices. Great post and enjoy your trips!

  • Great idea.

  • Kindle Keyboard and Kindle Touch both support PDF zooming.

  • The problem with PDF files is that they display way too small for my liking. I run the program Calibre, then convert the PDF files to MOBI. Or you can email them to yourself at (yourname)@free.kindle.com, put "convert" in the subject line, and Amazon converts them for you. Or do you know a way to make the PDFs bigger??

  • nice
