Taking blood from patients is something all medics need to get to grips with, because you'll be doing lots of it in clinical practice and during OSCE's. This video takes you through the full procedure step by step.

  • The technique of tie the tornique is wrong...

  • @kyweyokekalay I agree that there are far better techniques for tying torniques. This technique does work fine, but their are definitely more efficient techniques around, which we overlooked. As a result I have included an annotation with a link to a better method of tourniquet tying. Thanks for the feedback

  • -He forgot to ask if they been fasting, are they allergic to latex and do they faint at thesite of blood. that's what i was taught

  • @MZB3AUTiFUL1992 Teaching differs across various hospitals and countries. In all hospitals i've worked at it is not required to ask if someone has been fasting. The gloves are not made of latex therefore questions of an allergy are not relevant. You can ask if someone faints at the site of blood, although this is not something you would be marked down for missing in an OSCE exam.

  • ***Forgot to put gloves on prior to touching the patient.

  • @twistlives it's much better to palpate a vein before putting gloves on as your fingers are much more sensitive. The alcohol wipe is used before taking blood to ensure the area is sterile.

  • Good job. This will help me in my training. Although I was told (not saying its right) that the cotton ball should not go OVER the needle. I was told u should take out the needle and immediently apply cotton ball. But you look like a pro :)

  • worst gloves ever. i used them at work and accidentally threw the box away and had them order the stretchy ones haha

  • Great JOB!!!

  • @janinechisholm wet cotton ball? with what? it needs to be alcohol or dirt and other factors can alter the blood result. You must let the alcohol dry before inserting the needle.

  • @ShoutingParalized the bevel of the needle which is where the blood goes through is to be facing up...

  • @rlfps I'm afraid I have to correct you....arteries branch into arterioles, and then these branch into the capillary beds which perfuse the tissues of the body. Capillaries then drain into veins, which return the blood to the heart. :)

  • He puts the tourniquet OVER the place he is supposed to put the needle...

  • he contaminated the needle with his thumb

  • @ShoutingParalized Has to be up :) my teacher told me just now! And he's doing it kind of wrong

  • @345jubilee an artery is deep and protected by muscle(there are a few exceptions to this, femoral, carotid etc.). they branch out into veins(where blood is usually drawn), and finally into capillaries which circulate blood through the further distal areas of the body(fingers/toes...)
