This excerpt from "A Preparation for a Symphony" focuses on two interview clips dealing with the intense preparation necessary for the creation of world-class symphonic music. Jonquil Tanner, one of the violinists in the Columbus Symphony, is seen playing a specific passage of Beethoven's 7th Symphony in a rehearsal. We then dissolve to her playing that same passage in her home studio, as she talks about the work she must do to get ready for every performance. We then dissolve from the repetitive practice of another musical phrase to the entire orchestra playing that phrase.
Another comment in this excerpt comes from Maestro Alessandro Siciliani, who speaks to us immediately after his hectic and sweat-producing rehearsal of the orchestra. From a cinematic perspective, it shows the value of an authentic glimpse into the personality of a celebrity. By filming him when he is still flushed with persperation, with a towel around his neck, we are given a disarming look into the passion and commitment which drive him, and which inspires the orchestra to get better for every performance.
This production was directed by Owen Richard Kindig. Camera operator for the Siciliani interview was Al Laus of SOS Productions. The other videography in the excerpt, including Jonquil Tanner's segment, was shot by Owen Richard Kindig. This video won a bronze award from the Columbus International Film Festival in 1997. (An alternative edit entitled "Backstage with the Columbus Symphony")
This particular segment was singled out by the Executive Director of the Columbus Symphony as "a goosebump moment" in what she described as "the finest symphony video I have ever seen".
