This is a mastergrade gundam 1/100 scale model kit from Bandai. RX-78-2 version 1.5 from the classic anime ''Mobile Suit Gundam'' 1979. I customized it by using leds, cell batteries, magnetics and a switch. Glue, paint and soldering iron not needed!
This gundam has actually two different kind of modification.
1. Head, camera, eyes, back camera and cockpit detailing.
I did not use any paint, I used red/yellow soft material and red/yellow hard material to give the colour effect for the camera's and the led.
If you just put a led in the head, you won't get the same effect. You need to find the right colour, the right led and to think of a manner to prevent the light escaping under the eyes and the camera. Front and back camera: I completely removed the plastic connection in the back head part which makes a connect to the transparent eye/camera piece. I did that to light up the front camera better. For the back camera I made a hole in the plastic with a screw and I made it as square as possible with a hobby knife. To give it a better effect (must) I improvised and I found a small transparent piece from the tree. This piece is from the eyes of rx-78-2 version 1.0 and it is included in the box. (Can anyone tell me the point of that piece? Well, I know the answer now :p)
I cut the hard red transparent material in a perfect piece for the both camera's. I did not use any glue but it's not easy to do. It takes time and effort.
2. Led, wires, magnetics, cell batteries and a switch.
The second modification is the problem. I switch the lamp to a led because I also wanted to light up the cockpit. The problem is that leds are different than normal lamps (bulb) so the led has a + and a -. I didn't know that before and it gave me a lot of problems. My second problem was the fact that lighting up two leds with one cell batterie is not possible for me. You need 2 cell batteries to light up two leds.
This is the way you have to do it:
switch---cell---led---cell---led---and switch again to make a circle
This doesn't work: switch---cell---led---led---switch
This also doesn't work: switch---cell---cell---led---led---switch
This does work: switch---cell---led---lamp---switch
but the problem here is that the both lights has different energy volt. The lamp was not strong enough to light up with one cell. But using two cells is too much for the lamp.
Cell batteries: I used two batteries, each with 3 volt. Which gives a total energy of 6 volt. Also possible to use 3 V and 1.5 V, more light or less light. I prefer more light because I want to see the eyes light up at day light.
Magnetics: I found the magnetics in the red boxes :) The magnetic will connect the wires to the led and the wires to a cell. In total I used 7 round small magnetics. Soldering iron not needed, I don't even have that.
Cockpit: I also made a hole in the cockpit above the pilot for the red led and the big cell battery has two functions. The first to give energy of course and the second to reflect the red light. That's why I used a bigger one.
