PINA premieres in the official selection of the 61st Berlin International Film Festival (out of competition) on 13th of February.

PINA is a film for Pina Bausch by Wim Wenders. The feature-length dance film was shot in 3D with the ensemble of the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch and shows the exhilarating and inimitable art of the great German choreographer who died in the summer of 2009, inviting the viewer on a sensual, visually stunning journey of discovery into a new dimension: right onto the stage of the legendary ensemble and together with the dancers beyond the theater, into the city and the surrounding industrial landscape of Wuppertal -- the place that was the home and center of Pina Bausch's creative life for more than 35 years.

To LEARN about her work and about modern dance. That's what a documentary is about. That is why I went. I was disappointed because I walked out of the theater still not knowing anything about Pina. The documentary provided no exploration into the source of Pina's isolation and vulnerability (which it so often stated) that ultimately served as the catalyst for her choreography. It provided no background on Pina, no framework for the choreography. As a result, it was pretentious and meaningless.

Neither me nor my wife and any previous exposure to Pina Bausch, and truth be told neither of us really like most "Modern Dance." However, there was something about the beauty and expressiveness in this trailer that really made me want to see it.

So last night on our "date night," we checked it out. There were definitely sequences we could have done without (mainly the opening portion of the film, where the scene at 1:15 occurs), but overall I'm very glad we went.

@AinsleyIndiana: Well, at first I wasn't sure if they had just forgotten to bring their 3D glasses. For a few people this might have been the case but not for around 15 people who left the theater in the first half hour. I wasn't very familiar with Pina's work either, I accompanied my girlfriend who's into dance. But I try to be open minded in regard to any artform. Besides, I had watched some Wenders films before.

Really, people walked out? I don't understand why anyone would go to see a film inspired by Pina Bausch if they aren't familiar with her work...
