  • RB McDowell... what a legend! He's in his 90's yet he's still as bright and intelligent as ever.

    He's also still tone deaf!

  • I often saw R.B. in Trinity until a few years ago, invariably dressed for the Arctic with several long Trinity scarfs, walking slowly and helped up & down steps by pretty Arts Block women. He looked a little homeless, but I knew that he was in fact a distinguished Scholar.

  • oh.. he died already? oh my..

  • R.I.P. R.B. McDowell (1913-2011).

  • RIP RB, you always were our most gracious queen.

  • RB McDowell is the quintessential Trinity head. Renowned for their foggy delusions of grandeur – London's Anglo-Irish mongrel lapdogs (or so they like to think). Academically not exactly a pick on its arch rival UCD. Royalists like McDowell are a funny fish out of water, whats more annoying than his odd observations is his affected accent – did he say 'bollock'?

  • I met RB in number 38 on 17/11/2009 and he signed my TCD 1592-1952 book! He's rather frail and now stone deaf but I was so excited to have met him!!!!

  • A Great Irishman

  • As a TCD student McDowell lectured me on a course on British History 1715 - 1914? he spoke completely ex tempore and was vastly entertaining. It was much more like listening to a contemporary political gossip column than a series of lectures. I cannot recall the end date of the course. McDowell didn' t actually get past the 1760s in an entire year of lectures!

  • maybe you should grab a drink?
