Professional ballet dancers dedicate their entire lives to this shit. Full work days spent practicing, intense competition, tons of money dumped into it, and of course the health problems that almost inevitably occur.

But that's beside the point. When I need life saving surgery, I'll go to a doctor. When I want to feel moved by beauty, I'll watch these people. I'm glad not everyone decided to be a doctor, glad not everybody wanted to be dancers. There's nothing wrong or better with either.

As a student who is studying medicine and dances ballet I can tell you that it takes more work in dance than it does in medicine. Medicine is mostly memorizing and application. Dance is so much more than just memorizing steps and manipulating your body, although those are some big points. It's so incredibly physical, but your mind has to be there too. That emotion and control of your body comes from your brain. Besides, if I'm terminal than I'd rather be watching ballet than my doctor's face.

Don't take it to heart and try to convince her of anything, this type of people can't see the beauty in dancing because they chose not to. We need doctors and builders but we also need dancers life is about balance and her argument about next time when in the hospital is ridiculous everyone have their place doctors heal your body but dancers and any art expression touches your soul...

That's funny... My dad works in concrete construction and my mom was a stay-at-home mom. We didn't have much money at all, yet I'm a student of dance at Julliard. Let me tell you something.. I didn't choose to dance because I thought it would get me out of working. I chose it because I fell in love with it. In dance, you tell a story with your body, with your demeanor. And if you don't think spending 8 hours a day in a studio perfecting technique and rhythm is work, I don't know what is.

Listen I understand your reaction, but I think you're missing something. People all around the world are willing to pay through the nose to see these people dance. If that wasn't true, then there'd be almost no ballet students. Believe me, most of them don't come from rich families. It's not like they are being subsidized by the real "hardworkers" of society to just loaf around. Tthat people pay to come watch them suggests they fill some need that society needs filled. Like infrastructure.
