The US is too big and its too expensive. Great Britain is less than the size of the states of Minnesota and Iowa, Germany isn't much larger than the size of Minnesota and Wisconsin. Plus most of the tracks are owned by private freight railroad companies who don't desire to maintain the tracks for higher speeds.

ever since I saw final destination, I prefered rail traveling over air travel. I rode an amtrak about 12 years ago and I loved it. Kinda boring without a gameboy, but it was comfy enough to sleep through a good part of the trip.

My wife hate rail travel. Will you marry me?

@will101page In the US, nearly all tracks and rail beds are privately owned. The railroad corporations only run freight and have no incentive to spend capital on upgrading their rails for high speed passenger trains. A round trip coach ticket across the US on Amtrak is as low as $208 but airlines typically charge $400+, so airlines hate Amtrak. Many Republican members of Congress would like to end Amtrak altogether. It's all a question of who makes money...

Are american tracks not straight enough for High Speed rail? Sorry for my ignorance, I have never understood why they don't put 200mph trains on the Amtrak tracks? Thanks
There are two fare components when you reserve a sleeper; the rail fare and the accommodations (sleeper) fare. The best prices on the sleeper is as far out as you can plan. They always sell out and at the last minute, of course the prices go up. Thanks for your comment.

so if you stay on board and pay for your own room, do you need a key to get into your room?

@makeupbytony Unlike the trains in Europe, Amtrak is on the "honor" system. No keys are issued. The sleeper cars are at a separate end of the dining car so that anyone who passes through into the sleeps has to go past the crew in the dining car.

Where's the toilet? You didn't show it

@BayleighVII It's beneath the sink...and functions as a step to get to the upper bunk. Just make sure the lid is down!
