If Jesus has ALREADY paid the full penalty for for our sins by one offering of Himself as Hebrews 10:14 declares, then it is an INSULT to Him if we try to pay for what we have done.
According to Romans 6:23, eternal life is a FREE GIFT. And a gift, by it's very nature, is not earned. Everyone knows that you don't have to pay to receive a birthday gift for example.
The Catholic church gives way too much credit to it's church and to individuals when Jesus deserves all the credit.
If I intentionally break your window out of anger, then feel sorrow for it and ask your forgiveness and you grant it, then you have forgiven me and I thank you. Then I say, "By the way, don't slip on that broken glass old man..." If I am truly sorry for what I have done, then I will pay for the repair of that broken window, either now or later. That is the essence of purgatory...
