Push the analog stick only slightly. The farther you push it, the faster your character moves.

You won't be able to do a gradual range of motion with the keyboard since the keys only have 2 settings, on and off. If you have an wired Xbox 360 controller, you can plug that into your PC and use that. If you have a wireless Xbox 360 controller, you'll have to also get a wireless receiver (about $20). You could also wire a USB cord to an original Xbox controller. I've done it before, and it worked. You have to be really careful with that kind of stuff though
