2010 Faculty Innovator Awards: "Dr. Iz" reduced textbook costs by $175 per student by replacing printed textbooks with open-source web-based learning resources he created for his Introduction to Thermodynamics and Applied Thermodynamics courses at Ohio University's College of Engineering. The two-course sequence is required for all Mechanical Engineering majors at OU. The introductory course is used by the entire College of Engineering. About 140 students per year take the two courses. Dr. Iz began his technological innovations in 1999 when he developed a web-based supplement to enhance the textbook material he used in teaching thermodynamics. At some stage he realized that the textbook was almost unnecessary. During winter quarter of 2008/9 he was awarded Faculty Fellowship Leave in order to develop a complete open-source web-based learning resource independent of any textbook. Today, Dr. Iz's learning materials are instantly updated and provide worldwide relevant links and interaction.
