I saw them in Vancouver and Bono was having some trouble with his voice, and he just fought through it, there was no prerecorded vocals whatsoever.

It sure is. I wish these artists would record and perform material within their vocal ranges as they get older. U2 goes a little overboard with backing tracks although not as bad as Coldplay. Regarding smoking, Bono has said that he likes what smoking did for his voice.

Yeah, and Bono's an idiot for saying that. It's a justification for a bad choice: I'm sure he'd give anything to have his 'Zoo T.V.' era voice back (not that age wouldn't have taken its toll, but a better lifestyle may have helped, too).

Compare Bono to Morrissey: Morrissey never had Bono's range, but he still has his voice after the same amount of years singing (and they're roughly the same age).

I wondeer if Bono really smokes much at all. He's rarely seen smoking as far as I know. ANy info on how much he smokes?

I think he smokes a fair amount. He doesn't really disclose it but read U2 By U2. He talks about it a little bit.
