Hawaiian green turtles (honu) love eating a reddish seaweed called Pterocladiella. The turtles we dive with eat this almost exclusively.
Every once in a while, they burp red. The first time we saw it happen we thought the turtle was injured (like swallowed a fish hook or something).
Happily, no. We now realize the honu is simply digesting its dinner and --well, haven't we all had a meal that wasn't cooperative all the way down?
It's a turtle burp. Read the info.
