from the album "Local Ground"

Dún do shúil, a rún mo chroí
A chuid den tsaol, 's a ghrá liom
Dún do shúil, a rún mo chroí
Agus gheobhair feirín amárach

Tá do dheaid ag teacht gan mhoill ón chnoc
Agus cearca fraoich ar láimh leis
Agus codlaidh go ciúin 'do luí sa choid
Agus gheobhair feirín amárach

Dún do shúil, a rún mo chroí
A chuid den tsaol, 's a ghrá liom
Dún do shúil, a rún mo chroí
Agus gheobhair feirín amárach

Tá an samhradh ag teacht le grian is le teas
Agus duilliúr ghlas ar phrátaí
Tá an ghaoth ag teacht go fial aneas
Agus gheobhaimid iasc amárach

Dún do shúil, a rún mo chroí
A chuid den tsaol, 's a ghrá liom
Dún do shúil, a rún mo chroí
Agus gheobhair feirín amárach

TRANSLATION

Close your eyes, machree
My worldly joy, my treasure
Close your eyes, machree
And you will get a present tomorrow

Your dad is coming from the hills
With game and grouse in plenty
So close your eyes, my love, my joy
And you will get a present tomorrow

Close your eyes, machree
My worldly joy, my treasure
Close your eyes, machree
And you will get a present tomorrow

The summer sun shines bright and warm
And potato stalks grow greener
A bracing breeze blows from the south
And we will have fish tomorrow

Close your eyes, machree
My worldly joy, my treasure
Close your eyes, machree
And you will get a present tomorrow

  • the song is about a mother singing her hungry child to sleep by promising the father will be coming home with food tomorrow. I remember this song (and the explanation) from when i was a child. I had a video tape of a lullaby special that had aired on Disney. sadly the tape wore out, but my mom finally found the CD online last year, so i have all my lullabies again. (the CD is called Til their eyes shine if anybody else might be looking for it.)

  • @redfirerose i will look that up online, thanks

  • I recently played in concert with Altan and had the privilledge of meeting the group. When Altan Performed this song it sent shivers down my spine. They have not been recognized enough for there beautiful. Mairéad is an excellent singer/performer and does Ireland proud every time she sings.

  • tá sé seo le amhrán álainn mar atá sé i gcuimhne dom ar conas tá mé as obair le bhean chéile agus ceathrar páistí chun tacú le

  • Just for some translation help, "machree" is not the Gaelic word. "A run (or ruin) mo chroi" means "love of my heart" or plainly, "my love." So, "Dún do shúil, a rún mo chroí" means "close your eyes my love"

  • tt simplement magnifique à écouter merci (-:

  • Is brea liom an amhran seo. Tá sé go brae galanta agus is aobhainn liom Altan!!! (Translation From Irish To English: I love this song. It's so beautiful and I love Altan!!! I'm from Ireland!!!!)

  • sağolasın ;)
