  • Afterburners work in a similar way:they use a flame holder, a ring of metal inserted in the middle of the exhaust pipe that slows down the fast air coming out of the combustion chamber. The low-speed area is where the flame is kept alive. Without that, the flame would be blown out of the engine because of the too-high speed, just like when you blow on a candle. Fuel burns at a certain speed, and if Burning Speed < Air Speed the flame is blown away. Slower air=better combustion=higher efficiency
