St. Joseph Freinademetz was sent to China in 1879 as a Divine Word missionary. Tirelessly and generously he served the most needy in China, ministering to the sick, while at times compromising his own health. Born on 15 April 1852 in Oies, South Tyrol, Italy (then part of Austria), he died of typhus on 28 Jan. 1908. He was a humble person, a missionary par excellence, a prayerful Christian, and committed to his duties as an SVD. His love for the Chinese knew no bounds. He once said that he wanted to be Chinese even in heaven. Together with St. Arnold Janssen (SVD Founder) and St. Daniel Comboni (founder of the Comboni Missionaries), St Joseph was canonized by Pope John Paul II in October 2003.
I wrote this devotional song as a way of honoring St. Joseph.I first sang it in public on 29 Jan 2009 in SVD Philosophy House, Nairobi during the gathering of SVDs to celebrate the saint's feast.
