This went on for minutes while we taxied to take off. I was the only one to 'call attendant' .... It stopped in seconds. I think it was a social experiment. What would YOU do??
That is specific to A320 family of aircraft, they have a hydraulic transfer pump right under the floor in the middle of cabin, so when one of the engines is not running and therefore not powering it's own hydraulic pump, the transfer pump transfers hydraulic pressure from the working line to the non-working, and it generates all this noise. Enter "Airbus PTU" in search here and you'll see videos of the pump at work.
