A song from the slave plantations that comments, in a disguised way, on the task master who patrolled looking for slaves who left without permission. This is an example of a song used to help those enslaved cope with their terrible situation and keep their spirits up. For more information on the origins of this song see Akonting Session 11-Steal Up My Young Lady by Steve Levitt; also Bessie Jones, Rounder.

  • Thanks for posting this song. A group came to my elementary school in the mid-80s and performed this and other slave songs. I've always remembered it, but I don't think I've heard it since. When I saw my 11 month old son rolling around in the floor playing with a toy rolling pin I thought of it. I quick Google search landed me on your video. I was glad to get to hear it and the baby absolutely loved it! Thanks again.
