I can find star anise in any market...

@CJAEY, it does take time to make the broth, especially time to simmer the beef bones. Nowadays, you can get the broth stock pre-made. Normally, it takes me about 20 minutes. When I want a really good broth and have to make it myself, it would take about 4 hrs, but then in this case I would make plenty and pack some away for future use.

Forgot to add baking powder to the balls to give em that special "bounce." True vietnamese beef soup balls will return bounce 1/3 the drop hight.

I hear that pho takes forever to cook

the first time i ever tried to make pho myself, it did take for forever it felt, lots of spices to use as i really made it from scratch even for the beef balls. later on it doesnt seem to be that long to make.
my suggestion is if you want to make yourself at home with a quicker method, you should find the instant spice for pho(sold either in a pouch, blocks like bouillon blocks, and/or a pack). Just boil a sum of water, add the beef, then the instant spice, you are good to go :)
