LASD - Barricaded Suspect Shootout (8:05)
On Saturday August 2, 2003, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Stephen Sorensen, a 12-
yr veteran with the department, was shot and killed after he responded to a trespassing call
in the Lake Los Angeles area just east of Palmdale, CA. While it is still unknown what
happened, a witness reported hearing about six gunshots and called police. When Deputies
arrived at the scene, they were able to locate Deputy Sorensen's patrol car, but not Deputy
Sorensen. After searching for about an hour, Deputies discovered Deputy Sorensen's body.
He had been shot and killed after an apparent struggle.
The suspect was located a week later (Aug. 08, 2003) in a house not far from the scene of
the crime. Sheriff's SWAT teams surrounding the location and when suspect, who admitted
to killing Deputy Sorenson over the deputies stolen radio, refused to surrender, Deputies
attempted to end the standoff by firing tear gas into the house and assaulting the structure
with a huge, mechanized battering ram. A major gun-battle ensued when the suspect
opened fire with an assault rifle minutes before the house erupted in flames and burned to
the ground. The suspects body was later located inside, along with Deputy Sorensen's gun
and radio. This standoff took place live on KCAL9 news in the Los Angeles area.

  • This was a weekday afternoon (5:30 ish) on 8/8/03. Deputy Sorensen was KIA 8/2/03 about mid day. Kueck engaged SEB Deputies in the afternoon of 8/803 after several days of evasion. SEB Deps were forced to engage when Kueck opened up with an AK.

Containment, hot gas...... yadda, yadda, yadda...... Dead bad guy.

  • After the hot gas was deployed, the shed went up in flames. Steve's widow, who was staying with friends about a mile and a half away, could see the glow of the flames while standing in the front yard. She stated, "I wanted to see him (Kueck) burn in hell, but I guess Lake L.A. will have to do."
