Andrew Ryan built rapture because he attempted at first to be a business man, and upon this he realized how quickly, easily, and without question, his very own government was taking from him. "Why should I sacrifice all that I worked for? Just to save others?!" he thought. "I want a city where a man does honest work and gets what he works for, receives, what he truly deserves!" That is why Andrew Ryan made Rapture.

@06randallj That might make sense, but then again I don't think they're making any more games set in Rapture, so it probably won't go anywhere.
