As promised to someone who asked: an explanation of basic Irish bouzouki rhythm using hammer-ons and stuff, as seen in a video of Eamonn Doorley's playing on a YouTube vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lgIZVZf9B5c. Sorry, it's not usually the style I play but I gave it my best shot...

  • Very good tutorial but why are you not tuned ? I had to play along with you the 1st part with capo on 3rd and then and 9 like on the video called "Julie Fowlis 'Oganaich Uir a Rinn M'Fhagail' " (your link given in details is broken), and it was a great pain for my ears. But keep posting ! Very helpful. Be tuned the next time ;-)

  • @sherlock1310 I wasn't tuned cause I couldn't be bothered! Also I couldn't capo like on the Fowlis video because my capo won't go up the neck as far as the 9th.

  • Actually the reason why I'm a semitone flat is because I always tune like that and capo the 1st fret as my zero so that I can slide my capo up and down the neck quickly...

  • Great video thanks for posting .... you refer to an Eamon Doorley video which one is it or where can I find it .... Also is that a cittern or Bouzouki you are playing and what is the tuning capo placement etc.

  • @gooner005 I've added the URL of the Eamonn Doorley vid to the details. I'm playing a 10-string mandola which I usually tune GDAda but for this vid I tuned the top course down to d. In doing so, I broke one of the (very old) strings, so now it's only a 9-string mandola.

  • @gooner005 Take no notice of my tuning and capo - I didn't have a tuner and just tuned the instrument to itself and the capo is in random places. Doorley is playing an 8-string bouzouki tuned GDAd with a capo at the 1st and 9th frets for the bits of his vid I mentioned.

  • @clunktrip It,s a bit tricky to figure out the tuning , 9 string, 8 string, Mandola, Bouzouki etc. and I'll admit that it was a bit of a search to track down the original vid as you're link did not work ...... But all that said this is one of the best Bouzouki tutorials on the Net and I'm glad I found it. Thanks again for doing it and for taking the time out to explain. Any chance you'll be doing a few more ... say take a tune and teach a backing idea for it .. That'd be great ..Thanks Again

  • Excellent video. Thanks for posting it. :o)
