The correct name for Athenry, which has no meaning WHATSOEVER, is
Blaw On Ree and it means The King's Ford. So the fields of athenry should really be sung as THE FIELDS OF THE KING'S FORD. Or even The fields of blaw on ree. How can we revive our half dead Irish Lingo if we don't know how to pronounce our place names PROPERLY?? If your name is Fred, it is not John. If yourname is Suzy, it is not Nellie. SO WHY IS BLAW ON REE CALLED ATHENRY? Dublin is DUVlin, Belfast is Bayle Fersty and so on.
