Just did a quick test today of 9 computers PXE booting off of a Edubuntu server with LTSP active. Performance was great but would have been better if the switch being used had a 1Gbit uplink port. All 9 pcs were instead maxing out the 100Mb connection to the server.

The "server" specs are:
Dual 2.4Ghz
3Gb ram
6x 80gb in Raid 0

All "Terminals" are Single core 2.4 Ghz to 3.2 Ghz with 1Gb or ram

Sorry for the Video quality my cell phone lacks 1080i, I forgot to bring my HG10 and Steadicam. Maybe next time if I get another chance to some testing after work I will try on more PCs.

  • The biggest advantage with this is data management, all your data is collected on one computer, you need only to update the main server and all users receives changes. But use old computers for this is not a real good idea, because hardware begin to broke after 3-4 years. Its ok for school but for companies thin client is the real solution.

  • @Petrel2 3D software (blender, and games), can maybe work with localapp configuration.

Ubuntu is much userfriendly for ltsp configuration than other distributions.

  • Yeah, right, i have ltsp on ubuntu 10.10 at home, my server configuration is : i3 540 2,8ghz, 2 go ram DDR3, 160go HDD, the server run on gigabit network (with cat6 cables), the terminal is a Dell c521 (i think). I add a pci-xpress gigabit card on the terminal, its important for watch videos and flash correctly. I have also some laptop for testing others terminals. Compiz is not emulated with nvidia cards (open drivers), its work with intel graphics.

The problem is 3D software and games.

  • they're not paying you to make you tube videos. Get back to work.
