For the English language readers, I would say that George Steiner's book on Heidegger is a good starting point.

I didn't know that Heidegger called thinking a "project". In any case, you don't need to read anything by Strauss to understand Heidegger. Rosen also gets Heidegger wrong, and Bloom is a waste of time.
Read Karl Löwith, or better yet, don't read any commentary (in the spirit of Strauss) and just read the primary texts.

One must read Leo Strauss' discussion of Heidegger's project for mankind to fully understand what spirit fills this strange man. Strauss explains the movement of Heidegger's thought from Being & Time, to his intimation of a "world religion." It is found in Strauss' essay called "Existentialism" published in 1995; Interpretation,Vol.22,Nr3. If anyone wants this essay, email me, and I will send it to you. The 2 great thinkers of our time are Strauss & Heidegger
