with piano. Columbia master 6289, rec. London, 1913.
Anyone interested in the life and career of Santley (1834-1922) will have no trouble finding him on the web or in reference works. Suffice it to say that he was one of the most important singers of the later 19th century, much admired by colleagues and composers alike (Gounod wrote "Avant de quitter" especially for him). His few recordings were made very late in his life, and this is among the last. He was almost 80 at the time, and his voice had been a shadow of its former self for decades, yet I think you still can hear some of the qualities that made him famous more than 50 years earlier. If you listen closely, you can hear how much he enjoys recording this song, humming along with the piano interlude. A nice memento and possibly one of the shortest twelve inch discs ever published ...

  • @johnster1964 Isn't 'If with all your heart' a tenor aria?

  • Somewhere, I have a recording of him singing "If with all your heart you truly seek me" from Elijah. It's a knock-out !

  • Uh.. he's a rushing this a bit tbqh.

  • I've just discovered this Singer from another Post, and left a Comment saying I'd like to hear him sing something in English - and here I am! He's a lovely voice! Thanks for Posting this.
