Joe Zawinul, Ray Charles, Natalie Cole, Eumir Deodato, Enrico Rava... Die Begegnung mit Carlo Mombelli im September 2008 war reiner Zufall. Intensive Gespräche
über Kunst, Kultur und Musik boten einen gesunden Nährboden für den Beginn eines neuen Projektes. Da Carlo Mombelli und seine Band „The Prisoners of Strange
schon seit längerer Zeit zusammen musizieren und daher ein klares Konzept ihrer Musik haben, schlug er vor, die Band für spezielle Konzerte in Südafrika und in
Österreich zu vergrössern und somit wurde diese Besetzung geboren. (Christian Radovan)
Christian Radovan
"Last night I saw one of the most brilliant musical performances I have seen in a long while. And I say performances because it was just that. I'm talking about
'The Prisoners Of Strange.' Sometimes a group's dynamic exists that is so utterly comfortable, so magnificent to watch, that it blows you away. As the last note was
played every single person in the audience jumped to their feet in standing ovation. Breathtaking stuff." (iafrica entertainment)
Christian Radovan, who grew up in Pretoria in the 70's before moving to Vienna, lectures trombone at the Bruckner University and was the solo trombonist for the
eclectic world renowned, "Vienna Art Orchestra," for seventeen years. He has worked with Cecil Taylor, Kerry Wheeler, Carla Bley, Joe Zawinul, Slide Hampton,
Eumir Deodato, Ray Charles, The Pointer Sisters and Jermaine Jackson amongst others.
Kerryn Coulter is a freelance violist in Vienna and has also appeared with the Tasmanian Symphony, the Australian Philharmonic, Jose
Carreras, Kylie Minogue, Shirley Bassey, Nick Cave as well as working on international film scores.
She studied in Australia with Dr. Jan Sedivka and the Australian String Quartet.
Prisoners of strange
Peter O'Mara first met Mombelli in the 80's with the saxophonist Charlie Mariano where they made recordings of Carlo's works and in the 90's they worked together at
the Richard Strauss Conservatoire in Munich. As well as Peter's reputation as a teacher at the Bruckner University in Linz, Austria, he is the author of 4 books published
by Advance Music.
He has recorded and performed with Joe Lovano, Dave Holland, Bob Mintzer, Randy Brecker, Mike Nock, Al Foster, Kenny Wheeler, Anthony Jackson, Terri Lynne
Carrington, Gary Willis, Benny Bailey, Norma Winstone, John Taylor, the WDR and NDR Bigbands, NDR Symphony Orchestra and the United Jazz & Rock Ensemble.
They have performed live in the Wits Great Hall in Johannesburg and at the Blue Room in Pretoria as part of the Arts Alive Festival on the 10th of September and look
forward to presenting their exciting program to audiences in St. Pölten, Linz, Graz and Vienna in October.
With a cult following in South Africa they need no introduction. "The Prisoners of Strange," from Johannesburg is a collective 'spontaneous freestyle chamber ensemble'
with composer/bassist Carlo Mombelli, Siya Makuzeni on voice, trombone and gutterpipe, Marcus Wyatt on trumpet and Justin Badenhorst on drums. They have been
invited to perform at every major South African arts festival and between them they have performed and recorded with nearly every major South African jazz great, from
Winston Mankunku and Johnny Fourie to Judith Sephuma, Bheki Mseleku, Zim Ngqawana, Simphiwe Dana and Miriam Makeba.
They also played at the opening performance before Abdulla Ibrahim at the Leipzig Jazztage in Germany and will tour Europe this October.
Joining them from Europe for the Arts Alive Festival in Johannesburg is the Austrian trombonist Christian Radovan and Australians Kerryn Coulter on viola and Peter O'Mara
on guitar.
