The Fifth (and largest) Tsunami Wave in Hilo - Feb 27, 2010

I forgot to put these clips of the withdrawal and surge of the largest wave I filmed during the Feb, 2010 tsunami in Hilo. It's not dramatically different than the other waves, but it covers up almost all of the rocks on Maui's paddle (the rocky area in the Wailuku River). The water covered up one rock that was a foot taller than me when I went swimming in this same area a few weeks ago, so I know the water rose at least 7ft.

If you want to see pictures of larger waves shot in the same location, look up "Wailuku River tsunami" and you'll find pictures of a surge that swept up the river during the 1946 tsunami.

Wow, it's weird to see the Wailuku River in complete reverse. SO glad it was small!

Similar to photos taken of the 1946 tsunami in the Wailuku River - except, of course, in that case the waves were a great deal larger. In fact those waves destroyed one span of the railroad bridge that was originally located near the shoreline, where the metal-grid vehicle bridge is now.
