That's a Japanese and Hong Kong convention. Akira Kurosawa's colour films also have extremely red blood, as do the classic Shaw Brothers films. Just watch The Twelve Princes (translated as The Heroic Ones), The Blood Brothers, Vengeance, The Boxer from Shantung.

Terry Tsurugi's a great character. He is incredibly cool in his response and action, yet at the same time despicable for his heartlessness. Though every man wants to be him in some ways, in others, no man wants to reach his level of depravity.
