A Tribute to Roger Williamson who died at the wheel of his Formula One car in the 70s, a subtle reminder of just why F1 is so safety conscious in this day and age. This video is one of the few that actually show Roger's crash. Music is my cover of Snow Patrol's Chasing Cars.

--EDIT-- 24/10/07
There seems to be some confusion as to why the other drivers didnt help .. let me set one thing straight.

David Purley was the only driver who witnessed the crash. And it didnt take him long to get onto the scene. Now ... Purley and Williamson were team mates - thus they were both wearing the same colours - to every other drive and infact the dutch commentators - it looked like a march team member was trying to push over his own burning car. Only a few spectators, Purley and the marshals knew williamson was still inside. The Dutch commentry worked it out round about the same time you see Purley walking slowly away in defeat - at that point they annouce that williamson must still be inside the car.

Had the drivers known someone was actually burning to death, it may have been a different story...

EDIT - 04/11/10 - 100,000 views !!!!!!!!!!! :D

  • does anyone know if david purley was involved in the crash as well? or did he pull out of the race to stop and try to save him? either way he is a very brave man.

  • @steamindemon987

he just saw his teammate crash out and played no part in the accident itself.

  • @fradaja I wanted to add a personal touch to it i guess ... plus 3 years ago I did make the video with the original Snow Patrol version .. and youtube disabled the audio due to copyright infringement.

  • Thats a disgrace to the people behind motorsport in that era. Than god for Sir Jackie.

  • @stampede122 a really shit version :P

  • about 4 drivers per year would die in them days.

  • As with everything in life, we learn from our mistakes. Tragic watching this video. RIP mate.

  • @mrtitsmigee Reread my comment.I never suggested anyone should touch 2500 degree metal.I said theres no excuse for the marshalls not havin flameproof overalls

  • @HumbleTravelR so would you be willing to touch 2500 degree metal and rubber with your hands?

did you know that if you held that for more than about 5 seconds you would most likely loose all function in that hand.

  • What Niki Lauda did? He said that is not a fireman but race driver.

  • David Purley was a world champion motor cyclist in the 60's and early 70's.

He sswiched to F1 in the 70's. He received the George Cross for his unselfish heroics.

Later he left F1 and became a stunt pilot. Unfortunately, he was killed in a plane crash off the coast of Ireland in the mid-80's.

  • roger has a tree planted in abbey park leicester by me his friend who still miss,s him lots
