'Summer' violin concerto in G minor, 1st movement 'Allegro non molto'.

With Spring finally completed, now onto summer. Delving deeper into my rapidly decreasing archives of my photos (!) I have now set about the new task of representing the next season in Vivaldi's collection.

Perhaps to the surprise of some, the music in 'Summer' does not actually convey joy and trips to the seaside etc. - the music represents the bleakness of still, burning hot days, making labour difficult for the far more manually active folk of Vivaldi's time - farmers, shepherds etc.

Thus, I have chosen photographs that I feel convey this sense of dry heat - there is of course still the beauty of spring in all its greenery, but there is a clear sense of desolation, which I have tried to show by including pictures such as those from cliffs and the French Alps. I had wanted to keep the photos exclusively English to keep that nostalgic feel, but with a pressing demand for suitable pictures (I'm not going to use any pictures more than once, unless by mistake) I had to use the photos from these holidays. However, they have provided good material, not forgetting that the Alps are a lot closer to Vivaldi's homeland. Nevertheless, there is still a lot of English content here too.

I have in fact already made the video for the 3rd movement of this concerto, but haven't yet uploaded it because I want to do them in order. Therefore, with my mind back on this project, I should soon be onto 'Autumn' - keep looking out for these videos, don't forget to comment!

So here is the first movement of summer - do enjoy.

  • I really like this version. could you please tell me which orchestra and soloist this is performed by? thank you very much.

  • @celleo

Hi there, yes I love this version! It's a Naxos CD - the soloist is Cho-Liang Lin and the ensemble is just called 'Sejong'. It is directed from the harpsichord/organ by Anthony Newman. Hope this helps!

  • Reminds me of a scene in Bambi maybe, at the beginning they're grazing, and then the hunter comes and the deers start leaping and running.

LOL. I'm sorry, it's been awhile since I've watched the movie.

What a lovely composition. <3 Absolutely my favourite. :]

  • I can see the artist at work here, your mastery of timing the photograph and the emotion conveyed in the music is superbly done. Thank you for the joy to the eye and the ear, I look forward to more of your work. Best wishes,
