The NES Strider was actually based on the original manga series, while the Arcade/Genesis version was a standalone.

Don't forget, the NES version of Strider had kickass tunes as well by Misses Tarumi. Especially when Strider Hiryu infiltrates the Red Dragon base to kill Matic, that tune was definitely the best. =)
