If you've seen the E1M3 pit bug in my DOOM Historic series, you'll know what I'm talking about. In the first release/shareware version of Doom, there is a glitch with some line specials (more specifically "floor raise to next higher floor (changes texture)") and loading savegames.

I've made this map to demonstrate how glitchy this can be. Notice how much faster the platform rises every time I save, load, and walk over the next trigger (separated by different textured walls).

  • I remember another bug from the older versions of Doom - the "nearly bottomless" pit. It could be observed in E3M3 after the burning red room. Sometimes you would fall into the small pit for a long time, and when you press the switch to raise the platform the game would crash.

  • you broke it

  • A similar glitch also makes pinkys run really slow.

  • HOLY LOLCATS! The platform is possessed...

    by YOUR SAVED GAMES!

  • Nightmare was added later as a joke. Romero thought it would be completely impossible. Of course people have proven that wrong.

  • No nightmare?! O.O

  • interesting find, didn't know that first version of Doom was that bugged (the first version i played was 1.2 or 1.1)

  • wtf
