Playing tunes in the key of G ... please note, when I show close-ups of my fingers on buttons, YOU may have a few more buttons on your instrument ( the higher notes) than I have ... don't let that confuse you ... just use your ears to find he notes I'm playing :)

Hi there ... I expect it might feel foreign to begin with ... but stick with it. Try to relax your hands, use your arms, lift your elbows. It should come with practice. Having said that, my wife just cannot get the hang of using the bellows and struggling to play notes at the same time. Let's hope you're more successful than her ;)

You haven't mentioned it, but it would appear that you are alternating notes from one hand to the other.  Is that right? Thanks for a fabulous set of videos, this is a real gift!!!

Yes ... but you have no choice because on one end you will find c, e, g, b, etc and on the other you have the intermediate notes of that octave scale d, f, a, and the c at the top of that octave. Does that help? In other words you HAVE to alternate ends to play a scale.

So the english concertina isn't a push/pull system like a melodeon?

Hi ... you pull and push but get the same note on each button ... the anglo concertina is like a melodeon with different notes on push and pull Regards Martyn

Hi, it looks like all the post are several years old. I hope you can respond. I have just purchased an English concertina and I am grateful for your tutorials. I am experiencing on difficulty and that is isn opening and closing the instrument to get the sound. (the pulling and pushing) feels difficult and foreign. My hands/fingers get fatigue. Any tips on the action and ease of pushing and pulling?

Hey you're very welcome ... it's a good tune for getting the fingers moving up and down the scale AND for ear training ... i.e. recognising the position of a note within a scale :) Regards Martyn
