It's 'satsang', and it means the company of truth. Seeing as you missed the 60's, there was a HUGE movement, that is, lots of people, searching for meaning in life. Kissing Maharaji's feet seemed like a good idea at the time. They were tumultuous times.

Well it's quite ridiculous to talk about the "whole generation" most of whom lived normal lives without searching for anything apart from a lost sock.
